Minecraft was released in 2011 by Mojang. It's a sandbox game where you spawn in a random world made of blocks and basically just start doing things. There's no storyline or to-do list. The game is all about curiosity and small goals that players set for themselves as they learn how things work.
A typical new world begins with gathering wood from trees and trying to craft tools before nightfall. The gameplay isn't complicated, but there's a fun moment when everything is unfamiliar and you really don't know what's important. Then you realize you need shelter, food, and better tools, and things start to become clearer.
The survival mode forces you to think about hunger and monsters, so you always have to plan ahead a step or two. Digging through caves for iron ore is satisfying because you know it will turn into better equipment. Exploration is also a crucial part of the fun. Biomes change rapidly forests, deserts, snow, oceans and you never know what you're about to find.
Creative mode removes all pressure. You get all the building blocks for free and can build whatever you want. Some build castles, others craft bizarre redstone machines, and some just experiment to see what looks interesting. It feels very relaxed and more like a digital toy box than a game with rules.
The controls are very simple:
Minecraft has a control scheme where, once you understand the gather → craft → build rule, the rest comes naturally.
